Plan at a glance
Scenic-area scope and base town
Nanxi River Scenic Area is in Yongjia County, Wenzhou. Attractions follow the river through several towns, with Yantou Town (岩头镇) serving as a common base for accommodation and transport. The entrances for Lion Rock, Yongjia Academy, Shiwaiyan, Longwantan and the Cangpo and Furong villages are different, so enter the specific attraction you plan to visit into your map.
Nanxi River works best as a river-valley itinerary with two or several stops, rather than as one attraction reached through one gate or covered by one ticket. On a first visit, decide whether you want to focus on water, waterfalls, forest paths or ancient villages before choosing where to stay and how to travel.
Tickets, opening hours and trip length
Most ancient villages and streets can be entered free of charge. Yongjia Academy costs about CNY 50, Longwantan about CNY 60 and Shiwaiyan about CNY 50; each paid scenic area has its own admission. Most scenic areas usually open from 08:00 to 17:30, with last entry around 17:00. Public roads in villages and open streets are generally accessible all day, but indoor venues and shops keep their own hours.
Lion Rock, Yongjia Academy and Lishui Street can fit into one day. To include Shiwaiyan, the forest park and the villages, plan two or three days. Bamboo rafts, ferries, kayaks and high-altitude activities are not automatically included in scenic-area admission; confirm the route and price for each activity separately.

Water scenery and shallow streams
Lion Rock is suited to seeing the rocks in the river, taking a bamboo raft or making a short stop by the shallows. Yongjia Academy combines stepping stones, waterfalls, streams and cultural buildings in one scenic area. Shiwaiyan centres on a red rock peak, gorge water and a ferry route. Their water areas, paths and tickets are managed separately, so choose one or two according to the weather and your group’s walking ability.
Summer water activities depend on water level, weather, equipment and local controls. Even shallow water can have slippery algae-covered stones. Wear shoes with good grip and stay within safe areas; do not enter deep water to swim.
Forest and high-altitude activities
Longwantan National Forest Park suits visitors who want waterfalls, forest paths and viewpoints, with glass slides, viewpoints and other high-altitude activities available when operating conditions allow. High-altitude facilities, glass rafting and boat activities have separate prices, and their operation may change with the weather or equipment status.
Nanxi River works for visitors who enjoy continuous walking, while families with older adults or children may prefer the flatter main route at Yongjia Academy, the main route at Shiwaiyan or a short village visit. The attractions are not close together; a map’s straight-line distance does not show whether several stops will fit into one day.
Villages and evening streets
Cangpo Ancient Village, Furong Ancient Village and Lishui Street are suited to a slower visit focused on village layouts, waterside buildings and everyday life. The villages have narrow lanes, uneven paving and limited food and retail services. Visitors interested in history can place them after a scenic-area visit instead of packing too much strenuous walking into one day.
Build your day
One day of scenery and an evening street visit
You can visit Lion Rock in the morning for the river scenery or a bamboo-raft experience, then continue to Yongjia Academy for its stepping stones and waterfalls, and finish at Lishui Street for a waterside walk. Confirm the opening hours and transport connections for all three stops in advance. If a raft or water activity is suspended, remove that part and keep the land route.
If you are travelling from central Wenzhou, put the most distant stop first and leave time for parking and a meal around Yantou Town. Keep Lishui Street’s evening lighting as a flexible option instead of allowing one night activity to determine the day’s return time.
Two-day scenery and village route
On the first day, you can visit Shiwaiyan and Lishui Street, then confirm your return shuttle from Shiwaiyan before continuing to Yantou Town. On the second day, choose either Cangpo Ancient Village or Furong Ancient Village, then add the shallow river area or a bamboo raft at Lion Rock. Add the other village only if everyone still has enough time and energy.
The villages, Shiwaiyan and Lishui Street have different admission and opening boundaries. Whether you travel by foot, bicycle or car, plan each stop around its main entrance, parking position and final departure time; nearby locations are not automatically connected by a direct walking route.
Three-day deeper route
On a third day, you can visit Longwantan National Forest Park or Yongjia Academy, giving the forest waterfalls or the riverside buildings their own time. Longwantan has several uphill activities, while Yongjia Academy has a flatter route and a separate mountain route, so they suit different levels of fitness.
If you add Taogong Cave, Yaxiaku or another outlying attraction, arrange a vehicle in advance. Ride-hailing cars may respond slowly in remote areas, so do not wait until you leave the scenic area to start looking for a return car.
Get there
High-speed rail and Yantou Town
From Nanxi River Station, a taxi takes about 15 minutes and costs around CNY 30 to Yantou Town. You can also travel to Wenzhou North Station and transfer to a bus. Yantou Town works well as a base, but public transport does not necessarily reach every remote scenic area directly.
Driving and moving along the river
By car, the trip from central Wenzhou to the Yantou exit via the Zhuyong Expressway takes about one hour. From Yandang Mountain, you can take the Yannan Road. Attractions are spread out, so driving or hiring a car gives you more control over the schedule; during holidays, allow for traffic controls and parking delays.
Electric bicycles, hired cars and sightseeing buses
You can consider renting an electric bicycle for about CNY 60–80 per day, hiring a car or using an all-day sightseeing bus costing about CNY 30. An electric bicycle works better for short trips around Yantou Town and may not suit every remote attraction. Confirm the vehicle’s range and the return route before leaving.
Know before you go
Bamboo rafts and water activities
The route, operating conditions and price of a Nanxi River bamboo raft can change by location, weather, water level and on-site management. Confirm the route, duration and price at the official ticket point or the on-site operating point before boarding. Do not rely on fixed promises from private sellers near parking areas.
Wear shoes with good grip in shallow-water areas, and avoid deep water, strong currents and algae-covered stones. If there is heavy rain, rising water or temporary local control, cancel the water activity and switch to a land route.
Weather, waterfalls and spare time
Waterfalls at Baizhang Waterfall, Longwantan and other streams depend on recent rainfall. Water may be low in a dry period. Rain can improve the scenery but makes paths, bridges and stream edges slippery, so do not decide whether to continue based only on how the scenery may look in photographs.
The attractions are spread out, and a car may not arrive quickly in remote areas. Leave time to return to your accommodation or station from the final stop, especially when the day includes a ferry, bamboo raft or timed activity.
Villages and open streets
Free village roads, paid attractions, residents’ homes and indoor venues have different boundaries. Enter Cangpo and Furong through the main entrance and respect local residents’ routines. Lishui Street’s open lanes do not mean that every academy, stage, shop or boat activity is operating.
