A waypoint on the ancient trail
Chaotian Palace stands on Huanxi Slope, above Yellow Dragon Cave and below the First Heavenly Gate. It is an important waypoint on the ancient trail from Nanyan toward the Golden Summit. There is no separate entrance; visitors reach it on foot from the Nanyan or Golden Summit direction, and the visit is closely tied to the mountain route.
Tickets and route intensity
Chaotian Palace uses the main scenic-area ticketing: adult entry is CNY126, the CNY164 pass includes the Golden Summit and Zixiao Palace, and the scenic shuttle is purchased separately at CNY76. The cableway is CNY45 one way or CNY85 round trip. The cableway-up/hike-down route takes about 4–5 hours; the pure ancient-trail ascent from Nanyan or Wuyaling toward the Golden Summit takes about 2–4 hours, excluding the Nanyan Palace visit, queues, breaks, transfers, and return journey.

Yuan-dynasty origins and a mountain waypoint
Chaotian Palace was first built in the Yuan dynasty and was rebuilt and given its name by imperial order in the tenth year of the Yongle reign, 1412. The buildings visible today are mainly surviving structures after repair. It works best as part of an ancient-trail itinerary, where you can read its relationship with Huanxi Slope, Yellow Dragon Cave, and the mountain path toward the First Heavenly Gate.
The Ming and Qing Divine Ways
Near Chaotian Palace, the climb divides into two directions. The Ming Divine Way is steeper and has more scenery, while the Qing Divine Way is relatively gentler. Visitors who enjoy continuous steps and ancient-trail photography can choose the Ming route; those who want to control the climb should first check whether the Qing route is open that day.
Who it suits
Chaotian Palace suits hikers, historic-architecture visitors, and mountain photographers, as well as people already planning the Nanyan–Golden Summit route. It is not a separate attraction reached by simply taking a vehicle: above Chaotian Palace are the First, Second, and Third Heavenly Gates and more continuous steps, so plan for the entire ancient-trail section.

Cableway up, hike down
From the visitor center, take the shuttle to Qiongtai and the cableway up to the Golden Summit. Walk down via the Ming or Qing Divine Way, pass Chaotian Palace, continue to the Nanyan parking area, and take the shuttle back to the visitor center; allow about 4–5 hours. Before choosing this route, confirm the Golden Summit reservation slot, cableway operation, and Nanyan-direction shuttle arrangements.
Hike up, cableway down
From the visitor center, take the shuttle to Nanyan or Wuyaling. Pass Nanyan Palace, then follow the ancient trail through Langmei Shrine and Chaotian Palace, the First, Second, and Third Heavenly Gates, and on to the Golden Summit. The pure ancient-trail ascent from Nanyan or Wuyaling takes about 2–4 hours, excluding the Nanyan Palace visit, queues, breaks, transfers, and return journey. From the summit, take the cableway down to Qiongtai and transfer to the shuttle; this route requires stronger leg endurance and cardiovascular fitness.
A short stop at Chaotian Palace
Use Chaotian Palace as a short pause on the way up or down. Look at the relationship between the building and the mountain path, confirm the directions of the Ming and Qing Divine Ways, and then continue. If your stamina, the weather, or trail access changes, returning toward Nanyan from Chaotian Palace is more practical than continuing to the summit; follow the day's on-site instructions.
Get there
Reach the visitor center
From Wudangshan West Railway Station, take Route 301 or a taxi to the Wudangshan Visitor Center. From Shiyan Wudangshan Airport, take the airport shuttle to the scenic area. When driving, navigate to “Wudangshan Visitor Center,” park, and transfer to the scenic shuttle; the ancient trail leading to Chaotian Palace has no external vehicle entrance.
Choose the Nanyan or Qiongtai direction
For the hiking ascent, take the scenic shuttle from the visitor center to Nanyan or Wuyaling. For the cableway ascent, take the shuttle to Qiongtai and transfer to the cableway. The transfer sequence at Taizipo, Nanyan, and Qiongtai follows the day's dispatch, so check the station signs for the vehicle direction after entering the scenic area.
Know before you go
Reservations and tickets
Chaotian Palace has no separate ticket or reservation entrance. Entry to the main scenic area follows Wudang's real-name ticketing and reservation rules. On ordinary days, the scenic area typically operates around 07:30–17:30, with entry stopping at 17:30. Holiday schedules and temporary controls may differ; a visit toward the Golden Summit must also follow the Golden Summit/Taihe Palace timed reservation.
Steps and weather
Above Chaotian Palace, the ancient trail continues through sustained flights of steps, and the Ming Divine Way is steeper. Stone can be slippery after rain; wear shoes with good grip and carry water and rain protection. If the weather worsens, a trail closes, or you feel unwell, choose a descent at Chaotian Palace and arrange the return around the day's shuttle and station signs.
Return and last departures
After descending by cableway from the Golden Summit, transfer to the scenic shuttle at Qiongtai. If you turn back from Nanyan, return to the Nanyan or Wuyaling direction for the vehicle. These two returns do not share one fixed last-departure time. Confirm the arrangements on the day at 0719-5669777 for scenic transport and 0719-5689877 for the cableway.
