Location, tickets and hours

Yancheng Red-Crowned Crane Wetland is on Danhe Line in Tinghu District, about 50 km and one hour by car from central Yancheng. The main entrance is practical for drivers; K2 from the west square of Yancheng Railway Station takes about 1 hour 40 minutes.

Adult admission is listed at CNY 40. Children aged 6 and under, children 1.4 m and under, and visitors aged 70 and over can enter free with valid identification. The site is open 08:30–17:00, with no reservation required; tickets are usually bought by scanning a code on a travel platform or at the site.

How much time to allow

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the breeding centre, museum and any crane release scheduled that day. To include Eco Eye, Waterfowl Lake and Xu Xiujian’s former residence, plan for 3–4 hours. The walk from the main entrance to the breeding centre takes about 15–20 minutes, and the wetland area is open and exposed.

Main sights for a first visit

The Red-Crowned Crane Museum is a useful first stop for the species and reserve background. The breeding centre is the main place for close observation, while Eco Eye offers views across the wetland; Waterfowl Lake and Xu Xiujian’s former residence extend the visit at a slower pace.

Release season and birdwatching

Crane releases usually take place from around November to February and in early spring. They may pause from about May to October during the breeding period, and strong winds or thunderstorms can also affect the programme. 10:30 and 15:30 are reference times only; whether a release takes place and its exact time depend on the day’s schedule.

Families can make the museum and breeding centre the main route. Birders and photographers can spend longer around the wetland, Waterfowl Lake and Eco Eye. Food options inside the site are limited, especially for a longer visit.

Build your day

1.5–2 hours: breeding centre and museum

Walk about 15–20 minutes from the main entrance to the Red-Crowned Crane Breeding Centre. If a release is scheduled that day, watch it there before returning to the Red-Crowned Crane Museum. Leave through the same route and return to the main entrance.

3–4 hours: wetland highlights

Start at the museum, then walk to the breeding centre and continue to Eco Eye. From there, visit Waterfowl Lake and Xu Xiujian’s former residence before returning to the entrance.

Moving around the site

The area is large. Tandem electric-assist bikes can be rented at the east entrance of the museum for about CNY 40 per hour. Without a bike, the walk between the main entrance and the breeding centre is at least 15–20 minutes each way, so the bike is useful in hot weather.

Get there

Driving and bus

The drive from central Yancheng takes about one hour; use “Yancheng Red-Crowned Crane Wetland” as the navigation destination. Public transport is possible by taking K2 from the west square of Yancheng Railway Station, but the one-way trip takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, so plan the return before entering.

Food and nearby plans

Food choices inside and near the entrance are limited, so bring drinking water and simple food. There are no convenient nearby sights for a short stop; China Milu Park is about another hour by car and is better treated as a separate plan rather than a tight same-day connection.

Know before you go

Weather and crane releases

Strong winds and thunderstorms can cancel crane releases and other outdoor activities. If the release is the main reason for the visit, confirm the day’s schedule before setting out; ticket and opening details should also be checked against the latest notice before travel.

Sun, insects and supplies

Mosquitoes are common in the wetland, and summer sunlight is strong. Bring insect repellent, sun protection and drinking water; food available inside the site is limited, so prepare supplies before starting the longer route.
