Location, reservation and hours

Tiaozini Scenic Area is in Jiangang Town, Dongtai. Its main viewing point is the Tiaozini Birdwatching Platform, which is the most useful navigation destination. The area is open 08:30–17:00 and admission is free, but visitors must reserve a free day ticket through the “Meet Tiaozini” WeChat account.

This is primarily a tide-based birdwatching visit. Allow 1–1.5 hours for a short route or 3–4 hours for a fuller observation walk along the boardwalks and embankments. Public transport is inconvenient; driving or a hired car is more practical for a same-day return.

Who it suits

Spring and autumn are better for migratory birds, including the spoon-billed sandpiper, black-faced spoonbill and black-billed gull; resident birds can also be seen in summer. The site suits nature observers, photographers and sunrise visitors. Travellers looking for swimming, sand play or mudflat collecting should choose a different coastal activity.

Choose your visit

Birdwatching with the tide

As the tide rises, birds usually move closer to the shore to feed. After the tide falls, they often move farther across the mudflats or rest around 720 Highland. The main birdwave window is about half an hour before and after high tide, so the tide time should anchor the day’s plan.

Sunrise and wetland scenery

The mudflats are suited to sunrise and distant birdwatching in the early morning. Wild milu deer may also appear near the Liangduo River estuary, but sightings depend on the tide, time and conditions and are not a fixed attraction.

Build your day

3–4 hours: full birdwatching route

After entering, stop at the visitor service centre for the day’s tide information, then follow the boardwalks and embankments toward the main observation points. Use the half-hour window around high tide for focused birdwatching, then spend the remaining time at the birdwatching platform, 720 Highland and the surrounding wetlands before returning along the same route.

1–1.5 hours: birdwatching platform and 720 Highland

With limited time, go directly to the birdwatching platform and 720 Highland and use binoculars to view the birds at a distance. The route is short, but the birds are far from the viewing areas, so the experience depends on the tide and visibility.

Get there

Driving or hired car

Driving or hiring a car from central Yancheng or Dongtai to Jiangang Town is the practical choice. Use “Tiaozini Birdwatching Platform” as the navigation destination. Public buses are infrequent and waiting times are uncertain, so arrange the return before leaving the viewing area.

Birdwatching equipment

The site provides some telescopes, but the birds are usually far from the viewing points. Bring binoculars; photographers should use a telephoto lens around 600 mm to capture detail.

Know before you go

Tide times and permitted areas

The posted tide times may be inaccurate. Before travelling, check separate tide data for “Yancheng Jiangang Station” and then set your arrival time. Visitors must remain on open boardwalks, embankments and viewing areas; do not enter the mudflats or go mudflat collecting.

Food and return transport

There are no large food outlets nearby for last-minute supplies. After birdwatching, drive about 20 minutes to Fu'an Fish Soup Noodles (Jiangang branch), or eat seafood at Jiang Xiaolou. Arrange the return vehicle and meal timing before leaving the viewing area.
