How to Visit
1

Plan the cross-county journey

Travel southwest from central Yulin toward Jingbian, allowing for an inter-county journey of about two hours. Self-driving, a hired car, or a shared ride with a confirmed return are the most practical options.

Tip:Do not rely on an unplanned public-transport return from this remote site.
2

Begin at the museum

Start at the site museum to understand the Xiongnu capital, its layout, and the archaeological discoveries. If available that day, guided interpretation can add useful context.

Tip:This context makes the open ruins more meaningful.
3

Continue to the ruins

Continue to the ruins according to the park's arrangement, walking around the western city, wall remains, corner tower, and gate-defence structures. Include the transfer between the museum and ruins in your schedule.

Tip:Uneven ground and exposed paths require steady footwear and a measured pace.
4

Protect the return window

Allow around three to four hours on site, while also planning for the last transfer, your pickup point, and the evening return to Yulin.

Tip:Keep Wave Valley for a separate visit if you only have a short day.
Highlights
  • The museum places Tongwancheng's foundation, archaeology, and development in a clear historical context.
  • The pale rammed-earth city-wall remains are the site's most recognizable feature.
  • The southwest corner tower and western gate barbican reveal the logic of the ancient defensive system.
  • The open ruins and desert-edge setting give the former frontier capital its distinct character.
Insider Tips

This is a historical site rather than a densely programmed entertainment attraction; a quick photo stop will feel limited.

Uneven ground, slopes, and exposed paths make the ruins difficult for strollers, wheelchairs, and visitors with limited mobility.

Wind, dust, and sun can be strong, so bring a hat, sunglasses, sun protection, and a windproof layer.

Public-transport connections and return options can be uncertain; do not treat it as an unplanned stop without a confirmed way back.

Do not regard Tongwancheng and Wave Valley as parts of one attraction. If you only have a short day, choose one.
