How to Visit
1

Plan a standalone Jingbian outing

Travel southwest from central Yulin toward Jingbian and treat Wave Valley as a standalone out-of-town trip. Self-driving or a hired car is more dependable than piecing together local transport.

Tip:Do not schedule this as a quick stop between other long-distance attractions.
2

Choose the route at the visitor center

Choose a shorter route or a fuller route based on your energy. The longer option involves many steps, boardwalks, and sustained walking.

Tip:The longer route is not a good fit for a rushed visit.
3

Follow the open sandstone route

Follow the open route through the Flame Danxia area, narrow rock passages, and patterned sandstone walls. Elevated viewing facilities are optional extras.

Tip:Use the main walking route as the core visit rather than relying on optional facilities.
4

Allow time for light and logistics

Plan photography for softer light, and allow time to walk between exits, parking, and your return vehicle.

Tip:Do not leave the return drive to Yulin until late in the day.
5

Keep Tongwancheng for another visit

Do not try to squeeze Wave Valley and Tongwancheng into one short visit. Both are in the wider Jingbian area, but each deserves a substantial visit of its own.

Tip:If you only have a short day, choose one attraction.
Highlights
  • Layered red sandstone creates the site's distinctive wave-like patterns.
  • Narrow rock passages and canyon sections produce strong contrasts of light and shade.
  • Boardwalks and higher viewpoints show the wider scale of the Danxia landscape.
  • Weather makes a major difference to the color and overall experience.
Insider Tips

Much of the route is exposed to sun and wind. Bring water, sun protection, sunglasses, and a windproof outer layer.

Expect steps and boardwalks; wear supportive, non-slip shoes. Visitors with limited mobility should choose the shortest and least demanding open route.

Treat the main admission, glass bridge, escalator, and other transport experiences as separate costs.

Wind, dust, rain, and strong sun can all affect comfort and photography, so keep the itinerary flexible.

If returning to Yulin the same day, do not leave the drive back too late, especially when using a hired car or self-driving.
