Plan at a glance

The wall is open all day, but the tower keeps fixed hours

Zhaoqing Ancient City Wall is on Songcheng Road in Duanzhou District. Use “Zhaoqing Ancient City Wall (Chaotian Gate)” or “Piyun Tower” for navigation. A wall-and-tower visit takes about 1–1.5 hours. Add the museum, Liqiao Tower and Songcheng Qilou Street and you can fill half a day or more.

The wall walkway is listed as open all day. Piyun Tower opens 09:00–17:00 and is closed on Mondays; the lights on the wall and surrounding streets usually come on around 18:00–22:00. The wall is free to visit and does not require a reservation. Monday only prevents entry to Piyun Tower itself.

Decide which gate you will use first

Chaotian Gate is the simplest starting point for a first visit. Piyun Tower stands on the northwest side of the wall and provides one of the higher viewpoints over the old city. The wall, tower and Qilou Street are spread through the old city, so an unclear route can create a long return walk.

Parts of the wall have no shade, and stone steps slow the pace. Morning or after 17:30 is usually more comfortable than climbing the wall at midday in summer.

Choose your visit

One to 1.5 hours: Chaotian Gate to Piyun Tower

Climb at Chaotian Gate, follow the wall to Piyun Tower, then leave through Wenming Gate. You will see different periods of brickwork and the roofs of the old city, with a manageable amount of walking for a first visit.

There are stairs in Piyun Tower, and the wall also has stone steps and uneven surfaces. Comfortable shoes are more useful than shoes chosen only for photographs.

Half a day: museum, wall and Qilou Street

Start at Zhaoqing Museum, then walk to Chaotian Gate, Piyun Tower and Liqiao Tower before ending at Songcheng Qilou Street for food. The museum and wall are close, so doing the indoor visit first can help you avoid the heavier afternoon crowds.

Avoid Monday if Piyun Tower is part of the plan. You can still walk the wall on Monday, but the tower’s interior exhibits, viewpoint and registration service will not be available.

About 1.5 hours: evening lights

Arrive after 18:00, walk the illuminated wall and then eat along Qilou Street. If you still have time, continue to Paifang Square for the fountain. This is an exterior evening visit and should not be treated as a substitute for seeing Piyun Tower during its daytime opening hours.

The softer evening light works well for Chaotian Gate, wall corners and the old shopfronts. On holidays, walk the wall first and separate the food stop from the photography stops so that moving through the old city is easier.

Build your day

Quick route: up at Chaotian Gate, down at Wenming Gate

Chaotian Gate → wall walkway → historic inscribed bricks → Piyun Tower → Wenming Gate. Chaotian Gate is an easy place to orient yourself. Put Piyun Tower in the middle of the route, then return to the old streets after leaving through Wenming Gate.

The bricks include repair and maker information from the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and Republican periods. Rather than stopping at one brick, walk a section and look back at the layers of masonry to understand the structure.

Half-day route: indoor history before the open-air wall

Zhaoqing Museum → Chaotian Gate → wall walkway → Piyun Tower → Liqiao Tower → Songcheng Qilou Street → Zhongyong Road. The museum gives you a timeline of the city’s history before you spend the afternoon on the wall and in the old streets.

Liqiao Tower is about a five-minute walk from the wall and works well as a short stop. Qilou Street and Zhongyong Road are better places for a full meal or snacks after leaving the wall, which has no shops.

When parking is tight, avoid moving the car

On holidays, consider the parking lots at the east entrance of Songcheng Qilou Street or Fucheng Square. The city government parking area may be open free of charge during holidays, depending on the on-site arrangement. Once parked, connect the wall, Piyun Tower and Qilou Street on foot rather than moving the car through the old city.

The main roads around the wall can be congested at busy times. Arriving early is more useful than reaching the area just before the lights come on and then spending the first part of the evening looking for a space.

Get there

Rail and buses both reach the old city

From Zhaoqing East Railway Station, a taxi takes about 25–40 minutes. You can also take the K02 or K03 tourist route to Tianning North Road and walk about five minutes. City bus routes 1, 9, 10 and 18 stop at Piyun Tower or Chaotian Gate.

From Zhaoqing Railway Station, a taxi is more direct. For a first visit, entering Chaotian Gate or Songcheng Ancient City Wall in the navigation app is usually clearer than using only “Piyun Tower.”

Plan parking around the time of day

Driving options include the east entrance parking area at Songcheng Qilou Street and Fucheng Square. The city government parking area may be free during holidays, but access and availability depend on traffic control that day.

The wall connects several streets, so walking after parking is usually simpler. Ask about the price and location before using a private or temporary parking area, and make sure the position is convenient for your return route.

Know before you go

There are no supplies on the wall

The wall walkway has no shops, so bring water and snacks. In summer, add a hat and sunscreen. Visiting after the heat of the day helps, but you should still carry enough to drink.

Some sections use stone steps and uneven surfaces. Older visitors and children should walk at their own pace. Strollers and suitcases are awkward on narrow or stepped sections, so leave large items at the car or accommodation if possible.

Separate Monday access from evening access

Piyun Tower is closed on Mondays, while the wall walkway can still be visited. To see the three floors, exhibits and upper viewpoint, come Tuesday to Sunday and arrive well before the 16:30 last entry.

The evening lights cover the exterior wall and surrounding streets. Piyun Tower does not open at night as an extension of its daytime hours. If you meet a restoration barrier, follow the detour and do not cross into the closed area for a photograph.
