Plan at a glance

The main West Area experiences

The West Scenic Area combines the walk up to the Tianchi (天池) viewing point with a visit to Jinjiang Grand Canyon (锦江大峡谷). From summer through autumn, the usual route to the Tianchi viewpoint involves climbing 1,442 steps. The summit approach and transport inside the scenic area may change in winter depending on the snow season, weather and areas open that day. Jinjiang Grand Canyon is a separate walk within the scenic area; add it if it is open and you have enough time.

Allow half a day to a full day

The scenic area's official ticketing information estimates a peak-season visit of about 5–6 hours, excluding queues. Waiting, shuttle times, weather and temporary operating changes can all affect the day. If you want to visit both Tianchi and the canyon, plan for a full day.

Check which visitor center is on your ticket

The West Scenic Area has two visitor centers, at Chixi (池西) and Baixi (白溪). Enter through the center named on your ticket. Check the official ticketing page for the current combination of admission, scheduled bus service and transport inside the scenic area.

Tickets and visit details

View visit options for this attraction and confirm the visit date and current arrangements before you go.

Choose your visit

Tianchi (天池) viewpoint: decide whether the steps suit you

The usual summer–autumn route to Tianchi on the West Slope climbs 1,442 steps over about 900 meters one way. The viewpoint has open views, but the climb is the main physical challenge of this visit. The winter route and vehicle arrangements may differ; follow the seasonal notices and ticket details. If anyone in your group cannot manage a long climb and descent, skip the Tianchi summit. Before choosing Jinjiang Grand Canyon instead, check that it is open and confirm the walking conditions.

Jinjiang Grand Canyon (锦江大峡谷): an optional forest walk

Inside the West Scenic Area, Jinjiang Grand Canyon has rock walls, woodland and stream scenery. An older official guide estimates close to an hour for the loop. Check the day's notices and trail signs for current access and walking time.

Seasonal stops: Alpine Garden and Wangchi

The West Scenic Area also includes the Alpine Garden (高山花园) and Wangchi (王池). The ticketing FAQ lists their usual opening periods as around July to mid-July for the garden, and July 1 to September 15 for Wangchi. Dates can shift with the year's weather and operating arrangements, so check the seasonal notice before adding either stop.

For a separate river outing near the West Scenic Area, see Changbai Mountain Premier Natural Rafting.

Build your day

Put Tianchi first

Go to the visitor center named on your reserved ticket and take the corresponding shuttle to the West Scenic Area. Follow the signs to transfer to an in-area vehicle for the Tianchi trailhead. Climb to the viewpoint, then return down the same steps to the vehicle stop. Stops and shuttle schedules follow the day's arrangements.

Add Jinjiang Grand Canyon

After coming down from Tianchi, return to the in-area vehicle stop. Check the day's transport and signs before continuing to Jinjiang Grand Canyon. Walk the loop trail, return to the designated stop, and follow the in-area transport arrangements back. Use the on-site signs for the current stop and transfer point.

Adjust for queues or weather

The peak-season estimate of 5–6 hours excludes queues and is only a guide. If queues build or the weather changes, drop optional stops such as the canyon and follow the open route back. Do not skip transport, ticket checks or safety instructions to make up time.

Get there

Choose the visitor center shown on your ticket

The West Scenic Area's entry points are the West Scenic Area Visitor Center at Chixi (池西) and the Baixi Visitor Center (白溪). After booking, navigate to the visitor center named on your ticket. If the map label does not match, contact the scenic area before leaving to confirm that day's entrance for ticket checks.

Arrange a transfer from the station, airport or town

Changbaishan Railway Station, Changbaishan Airport and Songjianghe Town are not ticket-check entrances for the West Scenic Area. First confirm whether your ticket is for Chixi or Baixi. Then arrange a transfer through your accommodation, by taxi or with a chartered car, and agree on the return trip when you book.

Buy tickets through official channels

Official ticketing channels include the “Changbaishan” WeChat account or mini program and “Changbaishan Yijiyou” (长白山一机游). When booking, check the entry date, time slot, visitor center and included transport. If you book with a passport, make sure the document details match your passport. Bring your passport and the electronic QR code associated with the document number used for the booking, and arrive at the visitor center shown on your ticket within your reserved time slot. The West Scenic Area information number published in a 2025 Jilin tourism itinerary is 0439-6331900; confirm that it is still in service before calling.

Know before you go

Ticket and transport costs vary by option

Costs may include the scenic-area admission ticket, the in-area shuttle and an external shuttle from Chixi or Baixi to the scenic area. Check which transport services are included in your ticket, then add the listed charges on the official booking page to work out the total.

Weather can affect Tianchi and the canyon

Weather changes quickly at higher elevations. Tianchi or the canyon may close because of weather or operating conditions. Check scenic-area notices before leaving and again after entry. If an area is closed, follow staff instructions or end your visit; do not take unofficial trails, climb over barriers or enter closed paths. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket for the cold, windy summit.

Set your own pace on the steps

After climbing the steps, you must descend the same way. Wear shoes suited to stairs, take breaks as needed and watch your footing on the descent. If you cannot manage the climb, do not push yourself to reach the summit for a photo or to stay on schedule.
