How to Visit
1

Treat Wenchang Pavilion as a short old-city stop

Wenchang Pavilion is free and works best as a 45-60 minute visit. The main reasons to come are the nine-sided pavilion, old city wall, and surrounding old-city atmosphere, not a large museum-style experience.

Tip:If you are already passing through the old city, Wenchang Pavilion makes more sense than a dedicated long trip across town.
2

Use metro or bus first

Take Metro Line 2 to Yangming Temple Station, then walk or bike from there. Buses also reach the Lianhuapo area. Old-city streets are narrow, and parking is not reliable.

Tip:If you also visit Yangming Temple, Jiaxiu Pavilion, or Qingyun Market that day, a mix of walking and short taxi rides is smoother than driving.
3

See the exterior and wall before the nearby lanes

The most distinctive feature is the three-floor, three-eave, nine-sided roof structure. Start with the exterior from the wall and courtyard area, then continue to Diantai Street, the old wall section, and nearby lanes.

Tip:If the main pavilion is closed or interior access is unavailable, the exterior architecture and wall still make the stop worthwhile.
Highlights
  • Wenchang Pavilion's nine-sided form is rare and easy to recognize in Guiyang's old city.
  • Its position on the old East Gate moon wall lets you see architecture, city wall, and local street life together.
  • It is quieter than Jiaxiu Pavilion and better for calm architectural details.
  • It pairs well with Yangming Temple, Jiaxiu Pavilion, and Qingyun Market on the same old-city route.
  • The wall and lanes are better for slow photography in late-afternoon light.
Insider Tips

On Mondays or temporary closure days, do not plan around entering the pavilion; focus on the exterior and nearby lanes.

The wall and steps can be slippery after rain, so wear steady shoes.

Do not expect a large cultural scenic area. It is more of a key stop in an old-city walk.

Street activities and small concerts nearby are not daily events. Treat them as a bonus if you meet them.

Old-city traffic can be slow, and short taxi rides may be easier than finding parking at night.
