Town area and opening conditions
Tuocheng is in Tuocheng Town, Longchuan County, about eight kilometres from the county centre. The usual arrival points are the Tuocheng scenic-area gatehouse and the central street. The five core sites—Xuegong, Nanyue King Temple, Yuewang Well, the examination hall and the Chamber of Commerce—are currently free to visit; the old-town streets are open throughout the day, while private ancestral halls may charge separately.
The main exhibition buildings generally open from 08:30 to 17:30, while the town streets do not have one closing time. Allow 2–3 hours for the core sites, or 4–5 hours if you add the ancestral-hall street, old walls, Zhengxiang Pagoda and a walk along Sudi.

Xuegong and the examination hall
Xuegong retains the Dacheng Hall, granite columns and a traditional educational setting, while the nearby examination hall presents the Qing-era examination environment. These are the main stops for visitors interested in local history, traditional buildings and the imperial examination system.
Yuewang Well and Nanyue King Temple
Yuewang Well and Nanyue King Temple connect Tuocheng with the history of Nanyue and the Lingnan region. Focus on the remains, buildings and explanations during the visit rather than treating every local legend as fully verified history.
Ancestral halls and town life
Tuocheng retains a number of Ming- and Qing-period ancestral halls, old lanes and the everyday life of the central street. It suits heritage photography, family learning visits and slow walks, but private halls and indoor spaces have different access and fee rules, so not every building is freely open.
Build your day
A 2–3 hour core visit
Enter through the Tuocheng gatehouse and visit Xuegong, the examination hall, Yuewang Well and Nanyue King Temple before eating or having snacks on the central street. The core sights are close enough for a 2–3 hour visit, but enter each exhibition building within its own opening hours.
A 4–5 hour slow town visit
After Xuegong and the examination hall, continue to the Hundred Surnames ancestral-hall street, the old town walls and Zhengxiang Pagoda, then walk along Sudi. Late-afternoon light is good for the pagoda and lanes, but access to the pagoda and private halls depends on on-site conditions.
Two days in Longchuan
You can visit Longchuan Huoshan on day one, stay in the county centre, and take a slower walk through Tuocheng on day two before eating Hakka food and returning. Huoshan and Tuocheng have different ticket, opening and physical demands, so do not treat them as one half-day attraction.
Get there
Driving and parking
Navigate to “Tuocheng Scenic Area Parking Lot”; parking costs about CNY 10 per day and is close to the core area. Driving from Guangzhou or Shenzhen takes about 2.5–3 hours, and Huoshan, Longchuan county centre and Tuocheng can be connected by car.
High-speed rail and buses
From Longchuan West Railway Station, a taxi to Tuocheng takes about 20 minutes. Walking would take about 30 minutes along roads with traffic and is not recommended. From the county centre, take the Laolong–Tuocheng local service and get off at Xuegong; taxis inside the old town can be limited, so arrange the return trip early.
Know before you go
Free sites and private buildings
The five core attractions are currently free, but private ancestral halls, indoor exhibitions and other buildings may have different fees or opening conditions. Read the information at each entrance; an all-day street opening does not mean every building is open all day.
The central street has milk-tea shops, small private businesses and local snacks, but commercial services are limited. Bring water and order from a menu; you do not need to change the route to find a particular shop.
Weather and market days
The old buildings and streets have limited shade, so use sun protection in clear weather; after 16:00 is usually more comfortable for street views and photography. A local market may take place on weekend mornings, and the stalls and products vary by day.
Tuocheng can be combined with Longchuan Huoshan, Longchuan Museum or Dongyao Ancient Kiln, but these stops require driving. Confirm the parking location and next destination before leaving the town so that the return journey is not rushed.
