2–3 hours: family and heritage route
Main Gate → Bailian Lake → Chongxu Ancient Temple → Ge Hong Museum → Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall. The route is mostly flat and suits families, older visitors, or travellers who want temple architecture and a gentle mountain walk.
3–4 hours: lower-effort mountain route
Main Gate → Bailian Lake → shuttle → cableway uphill → Eagle Beak Rock viewing platform → short climb at Haohan Slope → cableway down. The cableway removes most of the ascent, and Eagle Beak Rock is the main mountain-view stop.
5–6 hours: hiking route
Gate 2 → Lion Peak → Eagle Beak Rock → Fen Shui Pass → Feiyun Peak. The route uses forest stone steps and mountain paths with sustained ascent, so it is for visitors with regular hiking experience who can manage their own descent time.
Build your day
Easy lower-mountain route
Enter from the main gate, begin at Bailian Lake, visit Chongxu Ancient Temple, then continue to Ge Hong Museum and the Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall. Keeping indoor venues for the middle of the day reduces sun exposure and physical strain.
Cableway route
Main Gate → Bailian Lake → shuttle → cableway → Eagle Beak Rock → Haohan Slope → cableway down. The cableway only covers the main ascent; reaching Feiyun Peak from Eagle Beak Rock still requires another 1.5–2 hours of walking.
Feiyun Peak hiking route
Gate 2 → Lion Peak → Eagle Beak Rock → Fen Shui Pass → Feiyun Peak. Do not plan only around the ascent time; begin descending by around 15:00 so that the cableway deadline does not become a problem.
Get there
High-speed rail and bus
Take high-speed rail to Luofu Mountain Station, then transfer to bus 268 for the scenic-area gate, taking around 30 minutes. Use the Zhu Ming Cave main entrance as the key arrival and return point.
Driving
Navigate to Luofu Mountain Visitor Centre or Jiabaotian Parking Lot; parking costs around CNY 20 per day. The drive from Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Dongguan takes about 1.5–2.5 hours. Arrive before 8:00 to reduce holiday queues and road congestion.
Know before you go
Fitness and cableway limits
The cableway stops around 17:00, so begin the descent by about 15:00. Missing it means walking all the way down. Feiyun Peak is not an add-on at the cableway terminus; it requires separate hiking time and fitness.
Footwear, weather and supplies
Stone steps and moss can be slippery after rain, so use non-slip trainers. The summit can be 8–10°C cooler than the foot of the mountain, so bring a windproof layer. Supplies are limited and more expensive on the mountain; bring 1.5–2 litres of water and food. In wet conditions, use the lower-mountain heritage route instead of attempting the summit.
