Plan at a glance
A hilltop viewpoint and uphill walk
东极阁 (East Pole Pavilion) is at the top of Yiliga Mountain in 抚远南山公园 (Fuyuan's Nanshan Park). Entry is free. A car can reach the foot of the hill or a midway parking area; from there, walk uphill for about 1 km, or 15–20 minutes, to the top. Include this climb in your plans.
When to visit
The park is open all day, but the pavilion itself may be closed. A quick visit for the exterior and city views takes about 30 minutes. Allow 1–2 hours for sunrise, sunset, or dusk, including the uphill walk and time to wait for the light.

Views from the summit
The summit platform offers views in roughly 360 degrees over Fuyuan and toward the confluence of the Heilongjiang and Ussuri rivers. On clear days, visibility is better; clouds and mist can obscure the distance. Even if the pavilion is closed, you can still visit the platform and see the exterior, subject to the open area on the day.
Sunrise, sunset, and city lights
Face east to watch the morning light, or stay in the evening to see the changing light over the city and river. The pavilion is sometimes illuminated at night, but the timing and whether the lights are on can vary. Confirm before planning an evening visit.
Architecture and photography
The main building is a wooden pavilion in a Tang-inspired style. Photograph its full outline from the outside of the platform. Face east in the morning and west at sunset; the light is softer early and late in the day. There is little shelter on the summit, so consider the wind and how cold it feels before staying to take photographs.
For a riverside sunrise stop, see East Pole Square and Wusu Town.
For an indoor art and architecture visit, see East Pole Art Museum.
Build your day
A 30-minute summit visit
Get out at the midway parking area and walk about 1 km uphill for 15–20 minutes to the platform. Look over the building and city, then return the same way. Starting from the foot of the hill adds distance. Include time for photographs, waiting, and the walk downhill; for a dawn visit, also allow for transport to and from downtown.
A one-to-two-hour sunrise or sunset visit
Plan backward from the day's sunrise or sunset and arrive at the parking area about 30–40 minutes beforehand. Walk uphill, take in the platform views first, then photograph the pavilion and city light. Return to the parking area by the same route.
Connect with other stops in town
After descending, return to town for a meal at 东极鱼市 (East Pole Fish Market), or visit the public areas around 东极艺术馆 (East Pole Art Museum) or 抚远口岸 (Fuyuan Port). Navigate to each place separately and check its hours. Do not let waiting for night lighting make you miss a museum's opening hours.
If the pavilion interior is closed
If the pavilion is closed, you can still climb from the midway parking area to the platform for the view and exterior. If weather management closes the path or platform, skip the summit; do not go around temporary barriers.
Get there
Taxi and driving
From downtown Fuyuan, take a taxi to the area near 东明寺 (Dongming Temple) or the free 半山停车场 (midway parking area). The ride takes about 10 minutes and costs around CNY 6–10. Navigate to “东极阁 (East Pole Pavilion),” “东明寺 (Dongming Temple),” or “南山公园 (Nanshan Park),” then continue to the parking area. Do not stop along the mountain road.
The uphill section and return trip
Vehicles cannot reach the viewpoint platform; the final section is uphill on foot. Note where you parked and how you will get back to town. The distance to the city is short, but arrange your return ride in advance if you are visiting at night.
Know before you go
Shoes, clothing, and the path
The path climbs uphill, so wear shoes with good grip. In winter, it may be snowy or slippery. Do not continue to the top if the route is icy, closed, or has poor visibility. Bring a windproof jacket in summer and in the morning or evening; shorten your stay in strong winds. Take distant views from within the platform. In mist or rain, focus on the building and nearby details.
Border area, weather, and food
This area is near the border; do not use drones. Views toward Russia depend on the weather and may not be clear. There are few supplies at the summit, so plan to eat in Fuyuan after descending. 东极鱼市 (East Pole Fish Market) serves whole-fish meals and mandarin fish; availability and prices vary by day.
