A forest park spread across several areas

Hongshi National Forest Park is in Huadian City, Jilin. The Jilin provincial cultural-tourism list classifies it as a 4A-rated attraction. A Huadian tourism itinerary gives the park's area as about 28,574.6 hectares and lists key sites including the Forest Oxygen Bar, Haozihu Camp (蒿子湖密营), also known as Yang Jingyu Camp (杨靖宇密营), Wangjiang Pavilion and Baishan Lake. These are in separate areas and work best as a driving itinerary, not one continuous walking loop.

Forest and lake areas

The Forest Oxygen Bar, also called the “Three-Color Oxygen Bar,” has pines, birches and red foliage whose colors change with the seasons. A provincial tourism itinerary lists a forest trail of about 3.5 km, a forest plant exhibition hall, an animal hall and an insect hall. Check the park's notice to see whether the trail and halls are open that day.

Baishan Lake is an artificial lake formed by the Baishan Dam. Its mountain shoreline, woodland and water offer a different set of views from the forest areas. Haozihu Camp is on the Hongshi–Baishan tourism route; official information places it about 6 km from the Forest Oxygen Bar. Allow for travel between areas.

Forest walks and nature exhibits

If you mainly want a forest walk, spend time at the Forest Oxygen Bar and plan around the sections of trail that are open. Families with children can check whether the plant, animal and insect exhibits are open. A 2025 Huadian itinerary allowed about two hours for the Forest Oxygen Bar; your time depends on which trails and exhibits are available.

A Huadian tourism itinerary recommends May through October, with September and October for fall colors. Forestry information lists wild azaleas and wild cherry blossoms in April and May. Flowering and foliage vary from year to year; check recent conditions and the weather before setting out.

Anti-Japanese United Army history or lake views

Haozihu Camp preserves sites and memorials linked to the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army. It suits visitors interested in combining nature with wartime history. The camp and the Forest Oxygen Bar are not the same walking area; allow time for the road trip between them if you plan to visit both.

At Baishan Lake, you can plan for lakeside views or a boat trip. Confirm the boat schedule, pier and operating status in advance. A 2026 report from China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration also mentioned newer offerings in the park, including ATVs, a glass walkway and capsule-style accommodation. Check with operators whether each is open and whether it costs extra.

For a separate mountain-forest and cave visit in Jiaohe, see Lafashan National Forest Park.

Build your day

Short Forest Oxygen Bar route

You can make the Forest Oxygen Bar a separate half-day visit. Follow an open forest trail, stop at signed viewpoints and nature-education points, then return the same way. The provincial itinerary allows about two hours at the Forest Oxygen Bar; that does not include driving, lunch or temporary activities.

Combine the camp, Wangjiang Pavilion and Baishan Lake

A provincial autumn itinerary suggests about two hours at the Forest Oxygen Bar, one hour at Haozihu Camp, one hour for lunch, one hour at Wangjiang Pavilion and two hours at Baishan Lake, then returning to Huadian City. The stops alone take nearly a full day, before adding drive time between areas.

If time is limited, prioritize the Forest Oxygen Bar or focus on Baishan Lake separately. Do not put every dispersed site into a short itinerary before confirming access and transfers. If you can book a boat trip, adjust the day's order around the pier and sailing time.

Get there

Driving is practical between areas

Huadian's tourism itinerary lists driving as a main way to visit and also mentions boat trips. The park is large; navigate separately to the Forest Oxygen Bar, the camp, Wangjiang Pavilion and Baishan Lake, based on the relevant entrance and road conditions. Do not estimate drive time from straight-line distances on a map. A 2025 Jilin cultural-tourism itinerary lists the park phone number as 0432-66885999; call to confirm that day's entrances and routes.

High-speed rail, bus and boat transfers

You can take high-speed rail to Jilin City, then check for an onward coach or intercity bus to Huadian. Alternatively, confirm whether a direct long-distance coach to Huadian is available. From Huadian, arrange a separate vehicle or transfer and return trip for the specific area you plan to visit, such as the Forest Oxygen Bar, Haozihu Camp or Baishan Lake. If you plan to take a boat, confirm the pier, sailing schedule, ticketing and weather-related cancellations before leaving.

Know before you go

Tickets and activity operations

The Forest Oxygen Bar, other park areas and boat trips may use different ticket types. Budget using the prices and inclusions published for the day. Also confirm opening hours, pier location, reservation rules, parking fees and the last entry time.

Forest, weather and travel buffers

Follow marked paths in forest areas; do not pick plants, light fires or enter closed areas. Forest trails and lakeside rocks may be slippery after rain, so bring shoes with good grip and drinking water. Check road and activity notices in fall and winter, when temperatures are low. Allow enough driving time between areas, and confirm where your vehicle is parked and how you will make the final leg back.
