Plan at a glance
Mountain and forest park
The park is in Jiaohe, Jilin City. Its main peak is 886.2 m above sea level, and the distance from the main gate to the summit is about 1,945 m. A Jiaohe tourism itinerary suggests allowing about four hours for the hike. This refers to the main Lafashan scenic area; Red Leaf Valley, Qingling and Chashuling rafting require separate plans and are not part of the summit route.
Peaks, ridges and caves
Lafashan is known for its peaks, rock formations and forest scenery, often summarized as “81 peaks and 72 caves.” Named peaks in local records include Wolixiang Peak, Qipan Peak, Zimei Peak and Yun Zhao Peak. Whether you can reach a particular summit depends on the routes open that day; do not plan a traverse based on place names alone.
Well-known caves include Chuanxin Cave, Babao Yunguang Cave, Tongtian Cave and Taiji Cave. Local records describe Chuanxin Cave as passing through the mountain, with different views and light at its two entrances. Not every cave is open for entry. Follow current closure signs, lighting conditions and safety notices over older route descriptions.

Choose your visit
Hiking season and highlights
On a first visit, check the day's open-route map at the entrance, then choose which mountain scenery, rock formations and open caves to focus on. For less walking, stay on open paths near the entrance; for a summit hike, allow enough time and energy for the full return trip. If you plan to use a cable car, confirm whether it is operating this season and its hours that day.
A 2025 Jilin cultural-tourism itinerary listed May through October as a suitable period to visit Lafashan and suggested about four hours for the park. Spring and summer are for forest and cave scenery; in fall, look for autumn colors in the Jiaohe mountains. The actual foliage period depends on the weather and cannot be promised for set dates.
Sunrise, sea of clouds and winter scenery
Sunrise and sea-of-cloud views depend on weather and visibility and are not guaranteed. A 2026 report described sunrise and a sea of clouds at Lafashan on a June morning, showing that this scenery can also occur in summer. The park offered a high-mountain winter tour in 2024, but its hours applied only to that operation and are not a schedule for the current season.

Build your day
Half-day hike
A Jiaohe tourism itinerary allows about four hours for Lafashan. Use that time for entry, hiking, stops at open viewpoints and the descent. If you also want to visit central Jiaohe or another scenic area, allow separate travel time. Four hours is a route reference, not a promise that every visitor can complete it at the same pace.
Adjust the route to the trail and your energy
After entering, check the on-site route map and follow the routes open that day; do not assume there is a loop that connects every cave. Watch your footing at cave entrances, on steps and slopes. Do not leave the trail to take photos or cut across closed sections, cliff edges or unfamiliar paths.
If you are traveling with seniors, children or anyone with knee or leg problems, agree on a turnaround point and meeting place in advance. Treat a shorter walk as a complete visit. Winter days are shorter, and slopes or rock surfaces may be icy; shorten the route and leave time for the descent. Follow any weather or trail restrictions announced that day.
Get there
By car
A Jilin cultural-tourism itinerary lists driving as a way to reach Lafashan. The Lafashan toll station opened near the Jiaohe service area on the Hunchun–Ulanhot Expressway in 2025, improving road access between the expressway and the park. Follow your navigation app and highway signs for the current route and restrictions. Parking spaces, fees and holiday controls may change; confirm with the park before setting out.
By high-speed rail and seasonal shuttles
A Jiaohe tourism itinerary also lists high-speed rail, but there is no year-round fixed shuttle timetable from Jiaohe West Railway Station (蛟河西站). Temporary direct buses to Lafashan operated during Jiaohe holidays in 2025; those departures applied only to the notices for that period and do not establish a current timetable. The Jilin cultural-tourism itinerary lists the park phone number as 0432-67515477; call ahead to confirm access, transfers and return arrangements.
Know before you go
Tickets and opening hours
Follow the park's notices for admission, daytime hours, cable-car prices and reservation rules. Prices and hours in older online guides may have changed. Before buying, confirm whether real-name reservations are needed, the latest entry time and which caves are open.
Trail works and hiking safety
The published work schedule runs from July 1 to October 30, 2026; a work period does not mean that the whole park is closed. Before visiting, confirm which sections are under construction and which trails are open. Stay out of fenced-off and work areas. Check the park's route updates even after the scheduled end date. Wear shoes with good grip, bring water and reduce the hike after rain or snow. In winter, check for temporary closures and dress warmly.
