Plan at a glance
A winter rime destination
Wusong Island (雾凇岛) is at the boundary of Hantun Village (韩屯村) and Zengtong Village (曾通村) in Wulajie Manchu Town (乌拉街满族镇), Longtan District, Jilin City, about 40 km from central Jilin. When water vapor along the river meets cold air, rime may form on the trees. It is a natural weather event and does not occur every day.
The typical viewing season is from late December through the end of February, but weather and viewing conditions vary each year. Plan a half day to a full day for this destination. If you want to reach the river before sunrise, stay in a nearby village the night before.
Hantun and Zengtong as places to stay
Hantun and Zengtong are separate villages and viewing bases. Their positions along the river, accommodation and guest services differ. When booking, confirm the village, meeting point, viewing areas open that day and pickup arrangements before buying tickets or arranging a car.

Rime and the riverbank
In the early morning or during the day, look for rime along open riverside paths. For photos, stay in designated safe viewing areas and do not walk onto the river to find a better angle.
Village stays and local life
Homestays and farm-style dining are available around Hantun and Zengtong, making it possible to pair an early viewing with an overnight village stay. When booking, confirm which village you will stay in, how to arrive at night, breakfast hours and whether an early-morning pickup is included.
Performances, horse-drawn sled rides and snow activities operate seasonally; they are not available at every homestay or every day. Ask the operator about dates, prices and safety arrangements before booking an activity.
For a near-city riverside rime-viewing option with different access arrangements, see Ashihada Rime Viewing Area.
Build your day
Half-day early-morning viewing
Stay in Hantun or Zengtong the night before and ask your host which viewing entrance is open the next morning and when to leave. In the morning, go from the village to an open riverbank, follow designated paths to look for rime, then return the same way. Visibility and frost conditions determine how long to stay.
If you are not staying overnight, book a car from Jilin City and agree on the return time in advance. If the rime forecast is poor, roads are icy or the scenic area closes temporarily, reschedule or stay in a safe area. Do not try to reach the river via closed or unmarked paths.
A full day in the villages
In the morning, enter the core viewing area that is open that day, following reservation or on-site rules, and walk along village roads and riverside paths. Return to the village for lunch and a break, then take another walk on open village roads in the afternoon. Return to your accommodation or leave by car before sunset.
This plan suits visitors who want time for photography and a village stay. If you are visiting only for rime, shorten the stay. Snow activities are not part of the basic route; check that day's ticket and operating information before adding them.
Get there
By bus and local transfer
There have been bus services to Wulajie from the bus station near Jilin Railway Station. From the town, you still need separate transport to Hantun or Zengtong. Schedules, stops and village transfers change by season; confirm the round trip before buying a ticket and contact your host in advance.
By car or chartered vehicle
For navigation, use the exact accommodation or meeting point in Hantun Village (韩屯村) or Zengtong Village (曾通村), rather than searching only for Wusong Island (雾凇岛). Confirm which village your driver or host will use for pickup and drop-off. Winter roads may be icy, so allow enough travel time and arrange your return driver in advance.
Know before you go
Tickets, transfers and accommodation
Entry rules may differ between the Hantun core area and village roads. When buying a ticket, confirm the areas it covers, valid hours and policies for seniors and children. Check the booking or ask the operator whether accommodation transfers, early breakfast and activities are included.
Cars may not be available at short notice in Wulajie or the two villages. Before entering the village, agree on a driver or homestay pickup, a meeting point and a return time.
Cold weather and river safety
The riverbank is cold and windy before sunrise. Wear a windproof outer layer, warm shoes and socks, a hat and gloves. Keep a spare phone battery close to your body; low temperatures shorten battery life. Protect cameras from the cold and bring spare batteries.
Winter ice conditions along the river and bank can be hazardous. Do not walk on the ice or approach ice holes, fast currents or unguarded sections of shore. Stay on open paths and follow on-site directions if there are closures, icy conditions or strong-wind warnings.
