Red-brick main building and spiral staircase
The red brick walls, pointed tower roof and building silhouette among the old-town streets are the main visual features. The red spiral staircase inside the tower on the west side of the main building is useful for looking at the structure and taking photos. Inside, follow the route through the corridors, cells and underground spaces.
The atmosphere of a historic site
The building retains traces of its uses from the German occupation period through the years before the prison function ended. The corridors and cells make that history tangible. The displays are limited in scale, so focus on the architecture and the site itself; it is a natural fit for architecture and urban-history enthusiasts.
Build your day
The 30–50 minute museum route
Enter from the east side and first visit the main building on the right, following the route through the red-brick structure, corridors and spiral staircase. The underground water prison and instruments display can be visited if open that day. Leave directly after completing the route.
A standalone old-town stop
Combine the museum with Zhanqiao or a walk around University Road without making a major detour. If you are also visiting the Former German Governor's Residence Museum on the same day, allow separate time for each entrance, opening schedule and visit length.

Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 3 to People's Hall Station and walk about 3–5 minutes from Exit A. Buses 25, 220 and 225, among others, stop at “University Road”; walk from there.
Parking and old-town roads
The surrounding roads are narrow and often one-way, with limited parking. Public transport gives you more control over arrival time; if driving, include both parking and the final walk.
