Plan at a glance
Three lakes and a one-way east-to-west route
Wenpo consists of three small lakes—Jingpo, Bipo, and Lipo—surrounded by black volcanic-lava platforms. The route normally enters through the east gate and leaves through the west gate, making it a self-contained one-way visit. Confirm in advance how your vehicle will collect you at the finish.
Tickets and operating hours
Admission is about RMB 20 and the boat ride is about RMB 20. Check the ticket office for that day’s east–west shuttle arrangement and fare. Typical opening hours are about 08:00–17:30; confirm the day’s ticket, boat schedule, and concession rules before setting out.

Choose your visit
Jingpo: underwater moss and lava textures
The Jingpo boardwalk lets you look at underwater moss and volcanic-rock textures, while the water color changes with your viewing distance. Stay on the boardwalk when taking photos and follow the day’s visitor instructions.
Bipo and Lipo
Continue along the one-way boardwalk to Bipo and Lipo for views where water, volcanic rock, and forest meet. The open order of the boardwalk and three lakes follows the route signs; if staff coverage is limited, confirm the full direction at the entrance.
Boat or boardwalk
The boat ride takes about 1–1.5 hours and suits visitors who want less walking and a passage through the reed beds. A full boardwalk walk takes about 2–3 hours and brings you closer to Jingpo, Bipo, and Lipo. Boat departures depend on the weather, time of day, and equipment, so afternoon service cannot be assumed.
Choosing the pace
The boat and boardwalk offer two different ways to experience the area: a moving water view or close walking access. If you have time for both, ask whether they can be combined that day and how each ticket is checked. Confirm with the ticket office whether boat, shuttle, and admission tickets are bundled. For a combination with other attractions on the same day, see the Wudalianchi Scenic Area overview and arrange the cross-area transport.
Build your day
Boat quick route: east gate in, west gate out
Buy the ticket at the east gate and confirm that the boat is operating. Take the boat through the reed beds, then follow the signs out through the west gate; the route takes about 1–1.5 hours. It does not return to the east gate, so arrange the west-gate pickup first. Before leaving, confirm whether the east–west shuttle is operating and how it is charged.
Boardwalk highlights: Jingpo, Bipo, and Lipo
Enter through the east gate and follow the boardwalk through Jingpo, Bipo, and Lipo before leaving at the west gate. Allow about 2–3 hours. Some sections have little shade, so bring water and sun protection; if the signs are unclear, ask the entrance staff for the direction.
Finish transfer and Beiyin Spring
The east and west gates are separated by a road journey, so decide how you will leave before entering. Beiyin Spring is a separate attraction about 600 meters outside the west gate; see the Wudalianchi Mineral Springs & Geological Museum Area guide and check its current opening requirements before visiting.
Get there
Driving and hiring a vehicle
Wenpo is inside Wudalianchi Scenic Area, where the attractions are spread out. Driving or arranging a licensed local vehicle in advance is the most practical option. Navigate separately to the Wenpo east and west gates, and confirm that the vehicle can collect you at the finish; use the day’s map and signs for the exact gate and parking arrangement.
One-way route and toilet location
The usual visit enters at the east gate and exits at the west gate. Confirm both the drop-off at the east gate and the pickup at the west gate before leaving. A toilet is available near the west gate, while facilities along the route are limited; use the facilities and buy supplies before entering if needed.
Know before you go
Heavy rain and temporary closure
Heavy rain or flooding can damage the boardwalk and lead to a temporary closure or route change. Confirm that the scenic area and the route between the two gates are open on the day. If a section is closed, follow staff instructions and do not enter damaged boardwalks.
Ticket differences and boat schedules
Before entering, ask separately about the admission ticket, boat, and east–west shuttle arrangement and charge for that day. Whether the shuttle costs extra follows the ticket office’s answer. The documents accepted for the free ticket for visitors aged 65 and over have not been specified; foreign passport holders should ask the ticket office. Afternoon boats may be affected by weather, time, or equipment, so ask for the first and last departure before planning around them.
Sun, shoes, and limited services
Some parts of the walking route have little shade. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection and water. Staff, toilets, and supply points are limited and may change; companions who need an accessible route should ask at the entrance before starting.
Fish and food in town
After the visit, look for mineral-water tofu or mineral-spring fish in the town outside the scenic area. Ask about the price per jin, weighing method, and cooking charge before ordering; restaurant opening status follows the day’s conditions.
