Location, entrances and opening pattern
Pinghai Ancient City is in Pinghai Town, Huidong County. West Gate is the usual starting point, while East Gate is closer to the food street and coffee shops. The old city is free, requires no reservation and is accessible throughout the day; arrive before 9:00 or after 16:00 to avoid midday sun.
The core is compact enough to explore on foot. Driving or renting an e-bike makes it easier to connect with Shuangyue Bay and Sea Turtle Bay. Some village-access roads become congested on weekends and holidays.

1–1.5 hours: easy route
West Gate → Cross Street → Seven Stars Well → East Gate. The East Gate area works for a snack, coffee or short rest.
2–3 hours: heritage route
West Gate Tower → Cross Street → City God Temple or Guandi Temple → Zeng Clan Ancestral Hall → Seven Stars Well → East Gate coffee stop → Pinghai Market. This covers gates, temples, ancestral halls, old wells and the everyday life of the residential quarter.
Weekend combined route
Pinghai Ancient City in the morning → lunch → Sea Turtle Bay cliff walk → Dashingshan viewing-platform sunset. The old city works best in the morning, with the coast reserved for afternoon and evening.
Build your day
West Gate to East Gate
West Gate Tower → Cross Street → Seven Stars Well → East Gate. West Gate is the most practical side for arrival and parking; the tower can generally be climbed before about 17:00.
Deeper heritage sequence
West Gate Tower → Cross Street → City God Temple and Guandi Temple → Zeng Clan Ancestral Hall → Seven Stars Well → Pinghai Market. The city remains a lived-in residential area, so it rewards a slower pace rather than dense landmark collecting.
Coastal extension
Pinghai Ancient City → Sea Turtle Bay → Shuangyue Bay Viewing Platform. The old city and Sea Turtle Bay fit into a half-day or full-day route, with the viewing platform as the sunset finish.
Get there
Driving
From Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Dongguan, allow about 1.5–2.5 hours. Navigate to “Pinghai Ancient City West Gate”. There is free or low-cost parking opposite West Gate, but weekend visitors should arrive early.
High-speed rail and local movement
From Huidong Station or Huidongnan Station, taxis take around 30–40 minutes and cost about CNY 80–100. Walk within the old city; retain a vehicle or rent an e-bike if continuing to Shuangyue Bay.

Expectations and residential-area etiquette
This is a lived-in old city, not a heavily commercialised attraction. It is best for travellers who enjoy people, architecture and slow walks. Old and newer homes sit alongside each other, so respect residents’ private space.
Food, sun and return travel
Pinghai Market is useful for snacks, seafood preparation and local noodles; do not make “market price” seafood restaurants your only meal option. Shade is limited and some lanes have mosquitoes, so bring sun protection and insect repellent. Taxis can be difficult to find nearby during holidays.
